Research suggests that augmented reality (AR) offers the transformative potential to resolve persistent science misconceptions by creating effective conditions for engagement and personalized interactions with science. Furthermore, informal learning institutions (e.g., museums) can make a lasting impact on misconceptions and increase engagement with science. To investigate the impact of AR in a museum context, we collaborated with the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum to implement an AR exhibit that would promote visitor engagement and reduce scientific misconceptions. We found that adults who used AR technology to learn about entrapment in the tar pits had significantly fewer misconceptions than at pretest. Participants also reported higher levels of interest and positive emotions related to science content compared to AR technology.
