Adapting Montessori's Cosmic Curriculum in the Development of a Hawaiian-Language Immersion Science Program

Mon, April 20, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to discover how Montessori’s Cosmic Education was adapted for use in the development of a K-6 Hawaiian language immersion (HLI) science program. Participants included 7 K-3 HLI educators and the principal investigator. Data sources included semi-structured focus groups, teacher reflections and work samples, classroom observations and coaching sessions, and school documents. Data were analyzed using the constant comparison method and grounded theory methodology. Four structural aspects of MCE supported HLI educators in creating a science program grounded in western science and Hawaiian culture. Study provides culturally responsive teaching strategies and further understanding of the seemingly incongruous conceptual ties between the Montessori approach and indigenous ways of teaching and learning.
