Educational History. History of Teachers of Color: An Introduction

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

"To forge the solidarities needed to address the urgent challenges facing teachers of color today, it is necessary to be knowledgeable about the unique and intersecting histories of different groups of teachers of color. There are many scholars and scholarly works that focus on aspects of American Indian, African American, Latinx, and Asian American and Pacific Islander education. However, there are far fewer comprehensive studies of the history of teachers from these communities. This narrative synthesis introduces the histories of American Indian, African American, Latinx, and Asian American and Pacific Islander teachers in U.S. public schools—groups that are most often the targets of contemporary efforts to increase diversity in the PK-12 teaching force.
