Indigenous Perspectives: Struggles and Triumphs of Indigenous Teacher Education in Canada and the United States

Abstract

This paper discusses Indigenous teacher education: past, present, and future with an emphasis on Canada and the United States. Policies, programs, and people who have contributed to the strength of Indigenous teacher education for Indigenous teacher candidates and where teacher education programs include Indigenous education in meaningful ways are highlighted through stories of struggles and triumphs. For the past 50 years, Indigenous teacher education programs have been shaped by Indigenous knowledge systems through Indigenous community engagement and partnerships; at the same time, these programs have included an examination of colonial impact upon Indigenous people, and education in general. The themes of reclamation, rights, and reconciliation bind Indigenous teacher education together in both countries and elsewhere in innovative and challenging ways.
