Recruitment. STEM Siren Songs: A Conceptual Framework of the Differential Racialization of Preservice STEM Teachers of Color

Abstract

"In this manuscript we address the need for a more nuanced and complex understanding of the racialized educational experiences of potential pre-service STEM teachers of color within the early and late college experience as a significant contributor in the persistent homogeneity of the STEM teaching workforce. We operationalize a perspective based on both our lived experiences as previous K-12 teachers of color, and our shared expertise emerging from our work with teachers of color in multiple teacher preparation programs and courses, specifically within STEM education. In this chapter, employing differential racialization as a foundational theoretical lens, we propose a conceptual framework for better understanding the nuanced and layered racialized experiential challenges potential pre-service STEM TOCs face across their undergraduate education.
