Program Design. Giving Back: Stories From a Circle of Native Educators on an Indigenous Framework for Native Teacher Retention

Abstract

The American Indian Teacher Program (AITP) works intentionally to address the scarcity of Native American teachers in the United States. AITP relies on cultural-based education that positively affects student engagement and academic achievement. After recruitment, the program’s faculty, staff, and candidates engage one another as a community of learners with Tribal community partners. Employing teachers who can forward the movement toward culture/community-based education has become a major goal for Oregon tribal nations. Mindful of AI/AN graduation rates lagging behind the national norms, the program disrupts the negative experiences Native students have had in higher education. AITP is committed to culturally responsive pedagogy and practice. Its vision has been o graduate educator leaders committed to culture/community-based education.
