Florida Educational Research Association: Exploring Student and Teacher Usage Patterns Associated With Student Attrition in an Open Online Learning Platform

Abstract

While open online learning platforms based on open educational resources (OER) are increasingly adopted in secondary education, little attention has been paid to factors related to student perseverance and attrition in the learning environment. We explored student and teacher-level factors associated with student usage duration in Algebra Nation, one of OER-based open online learning platforms being adopted in secondary schools. Results revealed that student engagement with video lectures, self-assessment, social tools, and additional videos relevant to solved test items significantly increased student usage duration. At the teacher level, teachers’ use of teacher resources was found to predict student usage duration.
