Computational thinking (CT) is an important skill to foster in early childhood. The five studies featured in this symposium explore technological, cognitive, and pedagogical issues related to young children’s CT. The set of papers is diverse in terms of their theoretical frameworks (e.g., constructionism, and sociocultural theory), research designs (e.g., design-based research, quantitative research, case study, and program evaluation), tangible technology platforms (e.g., commercially available programmable toys, robotics, and media and hands-on activities), age foci (preschoolers, kindergartners, and 2nd graders), and contexts (preschool, elementary school, and at home). Collectively, these studies contribute to the emerging understanding of young children’s CT development and explore important implications for both research and practice.
