Session Type: Symposium
In this symposium, we critically examine notions of classroom participation and learning in efforts in order to better understand and support a vision of classroom discourse practices that are dialogic, critical, and inclusive. It builds upon a 2018 AERA Presidential Session on this topic but features a new set of cutting-edge researchers working in this tradition and currently conducting studies that enrich, extend, and further the arguments first set out in the previous session. Authors from the 2018 group will serve as discussants on the new papers, reflecting on how ideas they explored have been taken up in current research, and how this work enriches our understanding of classroom discourse.
