Session Type: Symposium
Music teacher educators commonly ask pre- and in-service teachers to record, view, analyze, and/or discuss video of music teaching. However, a recent large-scale international literature review found scant empirical evidence about how classroom video usage fosters music teacher learning. Researchers have therefore been urged to investigate ways to maximize the effectiveness of video-mediated peer observation in the music domain. In response, this symposium brings together research on videoconferencing technology, video analysis for reflection and assessment, and digital teacher mentoring. A discussant will connect the findings and facilitate a large-group discussion. The ultimate goal is to outline strategic agendas for continued and systematic research focusing on classroom video as a tool for music teacher education and professional development.
