Abstract

Geography strongly relates to issues of educational policy and politics. Despite this connection, educational research primarily draws from other fields of inquiry such as economics, political science, and history. This symposium centers the utility of geography and notions of place in educational policy and politics. The panel brings five papers from internationally recognized scholars who use geographic thinking in educational research. The five papers reflect a diverse range of methodologies including geographic information systems (GIS) and quantitative and qualitative techniques. The paper topics cover segregation, school closures, school choice, and issues related to political boundaries. The symposium advances knowledge on how to use geographic and spatial thinking to address educational problems and builds momentum for geographic inquiry in the field.
