Exploring Signature Pedagogies and Pedagogies of Practice: Implications for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice

Abstract

Shulman claimed there are particular forms of teaching that characterize each profession - a signature pedagogy. While these pedagogical signatures tell us much about the pedagogies for individual professions, exploration of what is legible across professions warrants further investigation. Features of pedagogies of practice described by Grossman and colleagues provide a framework for further analysis of signature pedagogies and teaching and learning about interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) in professional preparation programs. This symposium explores the intersection of signature pedagogy and pedagogies of practice in two “relational” professions, physical therapy and social work, and suggests that examination of these paired concepts across the professions that participate in interprofessional healthcare teams may prove fertile ground for enhancing teaching and learning for IPCP.
