Preparing Teachers Through International Collaborations: Reconnecting the Local With Global Worldviews for Educational Change

Abstract

Teacher education programs across the US recognize study abroad programs and international field experiences as contexts for preparing teachers empowered with the knowledge and competencies to educate culturally and linguistically diverse PK-12 students and teach for the public good. In this proposed session, we present research conducted by teacher educators who have opened teacher preparation to global, international, and transnational collaborations for working with multiple stakeholders in addressing some of the most pressing local educational challenges. Building local, global, and transnational partnerships that engage preservice and inservice teachers opens such participants to professional learning opportunities that inform teacher educators’ understanding of how to prepare the next generation of teachers with the knowledge, skills and dispositions for collaborative educational change.
