This session highlights findings from four research projects focused on promoting rich science learning opportunities in elementary classrooms. With ambitious new standards in both science and English Language Arts calling for improved disciplinary oral language instruction in elementary classrooms, better understanding what young students’ science discourse may look like and how teachers can support this discourse is critical. The papers in this session report on findings about how specific teacher moves, student engagement with curriculum, and various forms of professional learning opportunities can support rich science learning in classrooms. Following the four presentations, an expert discussant will provide commentary about the papers and facilitate a discussion with the audience.
