Session Summary

Disrupting Disproportionality: Implications of Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit) for Teaching Toward Equity

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The proposed symposium brings together a number of leading scholars and educational stakeholders from inside and outside the United States to explore the potential of Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit) to dismantle the structured inequalities that contribute to disproportionality. Panelists will apply DisCrit, a theoretical framework explicitly committed to addressing the interdependence of racism and ableism and other intersecting oppressions, for understanding and disrupting the processes that lead to disproportionality of multiply-marginalized students in special education. Collectively the work presented on this panel invites teachers and teacher educators to take up theoretical tools, habits of mind, and research insights that equip them to disrupt the social, cultural and legal influences on multiply-marginalized students.
