Creating Space for Academics Through the Project of Public Intellectualism as Public Engagement

Abstract

This panel explores how to engage in productive dialogue and foster community outside of academia in through public collaboration with stakeholders. Participants will share insights into their research and experiences in forms of public engagement as they are practiced today. In doing this, the panel aims to challenge and expand the traditional role of a “public intellectual” from those who act as critic, problematize societal norms, and “speak truth to power” (Said, 1994, p. 85). Discussion will cover perspectives from both within academia as well as those embedded in other spaces such as community activists, teacher educators, youth movements and politicians to provide potential avenues for education researchers to pursue effective community engagement.
