Session Type: Symposium
The development, validation, and use of learning trajectories or progressions have become the focus of systematic research efforts in mathematics education in recent years as educational researchers, curriculum designers and practitioners grapple with the challenge of aligning constructivist instruction with curriculum and assessment. The characterization of learning trajectories as boundary objects reflects both the challenges and potential of working at scale over extended periods of time through the multiple lenses of learning scientists, psychometricians and practitioners. This symposium will draw on four significant bodies of work in this field to consider issues arising in defining, building, and validating learning trajectories, their evolution over time, and their use in practice.
A Model of the Development and Use of Early Childhood Mathematics Learning Trajectories - Douglas H. Clements, University of Denver; Julie Sarama, University of Denver
Developing Research-Based Learning Trajectories to Support Mathematical Reasoning in the Middle Years: An Australian Perspective - Dianne E. Siemon, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology; Lorraine F Day, University of Notre Dame Australia; Marj H. Horne, The Australian Catholic University; Rosemary Callingham, University of Tasmania
Supporting Middle-Grades Mathematics Teachers to Implement a Diagnostic Classroom Assessment System Based on Learning Trajectories - Jere Confrey, North Carolina State University; Meetal Shah, LearnPlatform
Examining How Learning Trajectory Focused Lesson Study Deepens Teachers' and Coaches' Professional Learning - Jennifer M. Suh, George Mason University; Sara Birkhead, George Mason University
