Effectiveness and Equity in Education for Students With Disabilities

Abstract
The academic and life outcomes of students with disabilities represent a persistent source of inequality in US schools. Students with disabilities lag far behind their nondisabled peers in math and reading achievement (e.g., Schulte et al., 2016). To address these gaps, special education researchers have largely focused on developing interventions in classrooms. In comparison, relatively little is known about the effectiveness of how and where services are provided to students with disabilities. Collectively, the five papers in this symposium help build a better understanding of: 1) current teacher quality and school climate gaps for students with disabilities (SWD) compared to their general education (GEN) peers, and 2) pipeline issues that contribute to these gaps.
