Session Summary

Informal Science Institutions and Equity: Future-Oriented Historiography of Research and Practice

Mon, April 20, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

Museums and science centers are playing an increasingly influential role in the educational landscape, ranging from long-term support for the professional development of teachers, extensive out of school programs for children and youth; and even partnering with school districts and other learning organizations. Some policy makers have argued that museums might play a significant role in addressing issues of equity (National Research Council, 2009) and while museums have been taking up this challenge (Hood, 2004; Persson, 2000), current research continues to reveal inequities (Dawson, 2018). In this poster session, we share compelling research from multiple sites’ efforts to put equity—equitable practices and strategies—front and center in their work.
