New Events and Their Implications for Analyzing Social Contexts of Education: Facing Crises, Technology, and Difference

Abstract

The experience of destabilizing events within education today come from three major domains: new social and ecological crises; new technologies, and new conceptualizations/creations of difference. Destabilizing events are not conjured a priori as negative but as perturbative, as requiring thinking-acting in ethical ways in the face of new aporia, of feeling caught between a rock and a hard place. The theme that unites the papers is the ethical requirement to respond to a perceived destabilizing event, without presuming a universal constant in what constitutes an event across unique cosmologies and timespaces. Four events that rewrite difference/intersectionality are considered here: new biological rationalities in education, financial crises and their implications for redefining race, eco-disaster, and self-orientation in an interconnected world.
