Portrait of a Program: Reconceptualizing and Revitalizing Rural Teacher Preparation

Abstract

Drawing upon historical, conceptual, and empirical studies, this session examines university educator preparation programs – their missions and visions, the preservice teachers they prepare, and the rural contexts within which their graduates are employed. Across these papers, the authors share an ideological and theoretical perspective that privileges rural places, promoting a deeper excavation of the complexities in revitalizing teacher preparation programs to better serve the needs of their preservice teachers and rural youth development more broadly. Together, the session presenters take a reflective stance on teacher preparation programs and, in turn, offer engaging and practical ways to envision institutional change to better meet the demands of rural schools.
