Session Summary

Compensation, Race, and Burnout: Examining Drivers of Disparate Teacher Retention

Fri, April 17, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Virtual Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

A large body of research provides compelling evidence that teachers play a defining role in student learning and long-term life outcomes; however, evidence also shows that students experience inequitable access to high quality and a diverse body of teachers. This panel assembles current research examining topics related to improving the development and retention of teachers, particularly for teachers of color. A key objective for this session is to collect and synthesize findings across these distinct yet interconnected issues of teacher policy and practice as they relate to the prevalence of biasedness in teacher observation ratings, the interplay between education leadership and retention of teachers of color, and the relationship between teacher stress, burnout, and attrition.
