Session Summary

"It 'Works,' but Will It Work for Me?" Supporting Teachers' Restorative Practice

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

The theme of this year’s AERA conference is the power of stakeholder and researcher collaboration. School climate improvement, especially in the context of diverse school communities, benefits significantly from both a researcher and stakeholder perspective. However, one stakeholder that is not often centered in the discourse on discipline reform is teachers. The purpose of this symposium is to better understand teachers’ perceptions of challenges in restorative practice implementation. Each paper critically examines teachers’ perceptions of and experiences with restorative practices in a variety of contexts across the U.S. Taken together, the papers surface the principal’s role in disrupting whiteness, building relationships, and advocating for culturally-responsive teaching and leadership professional development.
