Professional Ethics for Future Teachers: Toward a Common Vision

Abstract

This symposium will explore the idea of a common vision for professional ethics content in pre-service teacher education. Survey work revealed that a diversity of courses, topics, and values are associated with teaching and learning about ethics in initial teacher education. Better networking among all stakeholders involved in professional ethics in teaching and teachers’ ethical development are needed to create more cohesive discourse around professional ethics in teaching and improve the quality of ethics education that teacher candidates receive. Through the sharing of current research and substantive exchange, the symposium aims to initiate dialogue about the role and goals of ethics instruction and its thematic content in teacher education, models for handling ethics content, and how to assess educators’ ethical development.
