Challenging White Supremacy in Education in Charlottesville Post-2017

Abstract

In 2017 Charlottesville was the target of white supremacists violence in the “Summer of Hate.” While the media attention focused on the violence of the event, Charlottesville activists highlighted the connections to historical racism and inequality in the area. Since 2017, community activists and organizations have mobilized to address issues of systemic inequality and racism in housing, policing, and education. Charlottesville City Schools (CCS) were the target of a New York Times/Pro Publica investigation of racial inequality. This symposium brings together leaders of community organizations and educational researchers engaged in anti-racist and equity policy reforms in the Charlottesville City-Albemarle County Schools since the 2017. It examines the relationship between community-based advocacy, educational research related to equity in schools, and change.
