Conceptualizing Spatial Justice in Education: Creating, Navigating, and Surviving Racialized Space through Qualitative Inquiry

Abstract

In this symposium, critical women of color scholars and educators will present their research findings on interdisciplinary qualitative research methodologies that examine the spatial realities of people of color. We take up various modes of inquiry to illuminate how racialized individuals and groups conceptualize, (re)create, and subvert space to contest racial inequities and work towards transformational change. Specifically, we discuss Chicana/Latina feminist methodologies, geospatial muxerista portraiture, mental mapping, and critical feminist ethnomethodology. We encourage scholars and educators to engage in critical and interdisciplinary modes of qualitative inquiry that can bring spatial justice to people of color that are currently creating, navigating, and surviving educational spaces.
