Interrogating the Status of Digital Writing in Practice and Pedagogy

Abstract

This session tackles the definition and status of “digital writing” internationally at the intersection of two perspectives: transformations in modes of communication as a result of digital technology; and traditions and practices in relation to teaching writing in education –in the US, Australia and the UK. The papers offer comparative studies of digital writing, bringing together examples of children and youth's media-writing across compulsory schooling with examples of individual learners learning writing across media and over time. Approaches taken include discursive analyses of the ways learning platforms and curricula position students to material and posthuman perspectives on how digital tools mediate writing. Authors consider how to teach and develop ‘writing’ as it might be conceptualized across digital media.
