Session Summary

Globalization, Privatization, Marginalization: Assessing Connections and Consequences in/Through Education

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium focuses on the ways that globalization, privatization, and marginalization are connected and advanced in/through education. This focus is necessary because forces of globalization and privatization function in a dialectic fashion with conditions of inequality and marginalization in which the latter conditions advance the rationales and the effects of the former. Previous scholarship has documented how marginalized urban settings within and beyond the United States are regularly the target for educational experimentation by (interconnected) local, national, and global policy actors who wish to influence policymaking and to support innovative approaches to solving the problems of education. This symposium makes a contribution by bringing studies into conversation that examine these phenomena at different levels and in disparate geographic contexts.
