Session Summary

A Focus on Equity: Participant-Centered Research Alliances

Mon, April 20, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The assumption that research is out-of-reach, irrelevant, or unusable for practitioners and community members has been a theme echoed throughout academia (Coburn, Penuel, & Geil, 2013; Penuel, Allen, Coburn, & Farrell, 2015; Tseng, Easton, & Supplee, 2017). Research alliances that center participants attempt to alleviate this problem by having researchers, practitioners, and/or community-based organizations take joint ownership of work that aims to solve problems of practice. Research-Practice Partnerships belong to a field of critical inquiry that expands who participates in knowledge creation and helps shift what has historically been deemed ‘worthy’ in scientific studies. This symposium builds upon current knowledge, issues, challenges, and emergent possibilities in engaging in participant-centered research alliances that investigate issues of equity.
