Music, Movement, and Media: Tracing (Inter)Active Sounds and Sonic Interaction Across Diverse Learning Ecologies

Abstract

From the click-clack of a keyboard, to the ambient sounds of a passenger train rolling by, sound mediates our subjective experience. Despite the complex and entangled ontology inherent to this sonic position, sound remains a taken-for-granted resource and domain in interaction studies. Taking a “sonic sensibility” (Voeglin, 2014) to media, culture, and learning, this symposium assembles scholars from a range of institutions and research contexts to examine the diverse dimensions of sonic interaction. In particular, presenters will ask: How does sound - as a resource for design and affective atmosphere - shift, shape, and transform human and more-than-human (inter)action? When refracted across diverse media and learning ecologies, what are the audible contours of interactive play?
