Session Summary

Language, Head Start, and Culturally Sustaining Approaches in the Borderlands

Mon, April 20, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

In this session, we use a variety of methodological approaches including qualitative, textual, and multivocal video cued ethnographic methods to understand better how federal policy impacts children in different spaces who are being served by the most extensive preschool program in the US. Our papers address how immigrant children are conceptualized in federal policy, in the popular press, and the ways that understandings of language can impact the educational practices of Head Start classrooms. Cohesively, this session provides unprecedented understandings of the ways that a singular program plays out in different contexts.
