Abstract

This interactive symposium uses the excerpt from a 30 minute film to spark dialogue on Arts-Based Research in Education. The session begins with a brief discussion of an ethnodramatic film that describes a teacher’s first year in the classroom. A twelve minute excerpt from this film will be shown that communicates the ambiguity (Barone, 2001) of teachers’ power to help and to harm. A dance educator will then lead the audience through a creative response to the film that emphasizes the themes of harmony, conflict, partnering, and sharing lead and follower roles. The audience will then engage in small group discussion around three papers that discuss how to assess the visual, auditory, and social aspects of the performance.
