Session Type: Symposium
This symposium takes up AERA 2019’s call to “reclaim the historic possibilities of connectivity and collaboration in educational problem solving” by re-casting educational leadership as a shared endeavor between nondominant families, communities, educators, and researchers. These papers draw on solidarity-driven codesign research to illuminate how members of the Family Leadership Design Collaborative in Chicago, Salt Lake City, and Los Angeles partnered with families and communities of color to historicize experiences of schooling and education, envision transformative educational possibilities, and evolve new practices to cultivate social dreaming and transformative change in their own school and community contexts. We highlight findings that push beyond the conventional family engagement paradigm towards expansive leadership for educational justice and wellbeing.
