Abstract

This panel focuses on Latinx youth as they negotiate identities and communication practices at work. Research has expanded on Latinx youth doing school work. Less attention has been given to communication demands and identity negotiations involved in their invisible work at home beyond interpreting/language brokering, or their work activities in professional settings. Panelists include adult and youth researchers exploring intersections of work, identity, agency, and communication across contexts, with greatest emphasis on the underexplored contexts of home and professional work spaces. Data addressed in this session include rich ethnographic observations and recordings, open-response surveys (N=380), written work-study course assignments, and youth journals. Approaches include case study, ethnographic analyses, discourse analyses, and emerging participatory methods.
