Cultivando maestr@s bilingües: Testimonios on Highly Effective Bilingual Teacher Preparation Programs at Hispanic-Serving Institutions

Abstract

This symposium articulates an understanding of the importance of bilingual teacher education preparation programs that meet the needs of Mexican-American/Latinx students. Undergraduate programs are tasked with preparing future bilingual teachers to enter the field to work in classrooms that are composed of culturally and linguistically diverse students. The presenters respond to this challenge by providing their own testimonios of how their HSI’s (Hispanic-Serving Institutions) have successfully grown bilingual teacher education programs (Alfaro, 2018). Discussions will center on how programs develop critical consciousness within their bilingual teacher preparation programs through a “grow your own” approach (Valenzuela, 2016). This symposium will be conducted in English and Spanish.
