Materiality and Sociomaterial Practices in Learning, Designing, and Making

Abstract
Drawing on material culture studies, sociomateriality, and post humanism, the papers in this structured poster session highlight that materials are not benign, and in order to learn with them, we must acknowledge this. Materials have agency. Using qualitative and design-based methods, the authors explore disciplinary and cultural practices and learning goals that support learners to engage, tinker, retool, and converse productively with materials. Set in museums and maker spaces, camps and formal settings, the studies highlight ways participants—youth, families, young adults, informal educators—design, make, and learn from material conversations with craft materials, LEGOs, and hardware, as well as ideas and digital tools. The session sets an agenda for analyzing and designing for productive material interactions.
