Toward a Culturally Sustaining Model of Family and Community Engagement in Schools

Abstract

In this interactive symposium session, researchers and practitioners will present and discuss the intertwining nature of family and community engagement (FCE) in schools and the theoretical concept of culturally sustaining pedagogy (CSP). As such, this session is rooted in the notion that FCE practices are essential components to educators’ CSP—how educators communicate and engage with their students’ families is central to the development of their pedagogy. The symposium will include presentations on recent FCE research, promising practices, and policy recommendations. Facilitated small-group discussions will follow, in which participants will connect FCE research and frameworks to their own practices. Throughout, presenters and participants will critically examine FCE practices in light of equity-oriented work in linguistically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse communities.
