Drawing on Experience-Near Knowledge: Understanding School (Dis)Engagement Through Youth and Educator Voice

Abstract

Drawing on the perspectives of students, teachers, and school leaders, this session will share qualitative and mixed-methods research on risk factors to students’ school engagement as well as three interventions to engage students in school while mitigating these risks. This symposium will first describe how experiences of adversity, trauma, criminalized behaviors, substance use, bias, discrimination, and exclusionary discipline practices are interconnected, drive students away from school, and have varied impacts associated with student ethnicity and gender. The presentation will then shift to a discussion of school-based interventions, specifically focusing on trauma-sensitive, anti-bias, and restorative justice practices and their potential to promote safe, supportive, and equitable school environments. Implications for school engagement will be discussed.
