Internationally Distributed Collaboration With School-Aged Learners and Teachers

Abstract
This session focuses on research in the design and function of internationally distributed collaboration (IDC) between school-aged learners. One paper will also address IDC between primary grade teachers and researchers. IDC, for the purposes of this session, refers to computer-supported collaborations that are both synchronously and asynchronously virtual. How do school-age learners and teachers from starkly different cultural, national, and economic contexts communicate virtually? What theoretical frameworks both benefit the analysis of such collaborative ecosystems, and benefit from such analysis? In what specific ways does such IDC with school-aged learners and teachers foster the social, intellectual, and cross-cultural competences a global workforce requires? The session’s empirical and theoretical papers precede a short panel and audience discussion.
