Abstract

Our schools are not currently designed for social justice. Indeed, in many ways they perpetuate and deepen injustice. These injustices are reified by our educator preparation and professional learning structures—except in cases where stakeholders make a conscious effort to change. This symposium brings together international research exploring the power of teachers as leaders or agents of change for social justice and explores the possibility of preparing teachers more deliberately for this role. Through this research, we collaboratively explore the roles and practices of teacher leadership for social justice in various contexts and for diverse purposes. The symposium will feature a panel discussion that draws upon findings from the individual papers to stimulate discourse about cross-cutting themes with the audience.
