Session Type: Symposium
Scholars working at the interface of special education for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students agree that use of culturally and linguistically responsive teaching (CLRT) holds great promise (Brown & Doolittle 2008; Klingner, Soltero-Gonzalez & Lesaux, 2010). However, relatively little is understood about how teachers use this type of instruction in classrooms with CLD students (August & Siegel, 2006; Goldenberg, 2011). Thus, special education and general education teachers often have limited knowledge of how to apply CLRT practices (Orosco & Klingner, 2010; Orosco & O’Connor, 2011). This session address this gap, presenting empirical studies that explore the use of CLRT for CLD students in special education. Ultimately, our goal is to advance the knowledge of special education for CLD students.
