The Use of Online Courses for High School Credit Recovery: Implementation, Initial Outcomes, and Costs

Abstract

To engage researchers and organizational stakeholders in a discussion about the effectiveness of online credit recovery, this symposium provides an in-depth look at the results of a multisite randomized study that compared online and traditional teacher-directed classes for ninth grade credit recovery in a large urban school district. The study findings, including challenges that disrupted the theory of action, raise important questions for policymakers and practitioners about how to best use online courses for credit recovery. A discussion panel, including a district administrator, online provider, and education researcher, will provide a multifaceted take on the significance of the research from different stakeholder perspectives. The symposium’s structure includes an extended discussion that will encourage audience participation.
