Session Type: Symposium
In this symposium, we bring together five studies from around the country all of which examine different aspects of the English learner (EL) student community college experience. These papers not only grapple with how to define and operationalize EL students at the postsecondary level (Núñez et al., 2016), but also use qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches to better understand what facilitates EL students’ engagement, transfer, and success in the community college context. In a time when ESL programs and faculty find themselves increasingly marginalized, the symposium concludes with insights from a critical policy analysis (Diem et al., 2014) examining what the current community college reform agenda means for EL students.
