Session Summary

Competency-Based Education in the Health Professions: Using Applied Research to Improve Learner and Societal Outcomes

Sat, April 18, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

How well do our educational methods prepare our learners to meet societal needs? Health professions education groups around the world are adopting competency-based education (CBE) frameworks out of concern for patient safety and the public demand for accountability. CBE is an educational philosophy and approach that provides an opportunity to engage in an iterative and reflective process. Many health professions are using a research process to restructure programs that make the outcomes of education more explicit. This session will explore trends in CBE, describe how multiple partners within one profession collaborated to educate colleagues about CBE, and engage in a critical dialogue about the role of CBE in promoting the public good in the health professions.
