Collaborative Engagement in Higher Education Reform Networks: Applying a Framework to Understand Network Dynamics

Abstract

Large networks of individuals, institutions, and partner organizations continue to proliferate and advance collective change in higher education. Through collaborative engagement, these initiatives are believed to positively affect what reform activities are pursued, leading to more effective change. Yet, despite the assumed importance of the collaborative aspects of these initiatives, network functioning is rarely investigated. The purpose of this session is to examine key elements of network functioning in four higher education reform networks. Participants will gain: (1) a greater appreciation for collaborative dynamics in understanding network impact, (2) an expanded understanding of key elements of network functioning, and (3) practical collaborative skills and strategies to take back to their own reform initiatives.
