"It's a Marathon, Not a Sprint": Sustaining Racial Justice Work in Schools

Abstract

Evidence shows that educators’ racial biases can greatly influence students’ experience and outcomes in school (Fabelo et al., 2011; Hibel, Farkas, & Morgan, 2010; Mitchell, Bradshaw, & Leaf, 2010). In response, many school districts are providing training to educators around implicit bias and racial equity. Consistent with this year’s theme, this session will feature the perspectives of and collaboration among stakeholders engaged in a year-long racial justice program in schools including a district leader, a program provider, a research team, and a principal from one of the participating schools. The aim of this session will be to show how these organizational stakeholders are collaborating to address racial bias in schools and highlight ways of improving racial justice work more broadly.
