Session Type: Symposium
In this symposium, we explore the affordances and constraints of designing consequential and justice-oriented teacher learning environments. We argue that focused attention on the processes of teacher learning and development must be anchored in a set of political and ethical commitments. As such, our collective work highlights the possibilities and considerations of viewing teacher learning as a multilayered, dialogical process that can be expanded through intentionally designed partnerships and environments. We nuance current understandings of “core practices” by highlighting the contextual and interactional nature of teaching, and how teachers’ enactment of practices, core or otherwise, requires an ethical attunement (Shotter, 2015) to how pedagogy reflects political goals that can hinder or expand the learning experiences of students.
