Filling a Critical Leadership Gap: Developing Principal Instructional Leadership Through Principal Supervision

Abstract
In an era of increasing focus on effective school leadership and reform, school districts continually strive to support and develop their principals and improve their effectiveness. This symposium examines the changing role of principal supervisors and the uses of supervision as a strategy and lever for developing and supporting principals as instructional leaders. The papers provide empirical data around the perspectives, practices, and challenges in the supervisor-principal relationship by asking such questions as: What conditions allow districts to transform the role of principal supervisors from compliance officers to principal coaches? What barriers limit the implementation of these new roles or the leadership development supports they are intended to provide to principals? And, does this change help develop effective principals?
