Abstract

Across a global youth movement toward justice, young people are engaging myriad linguistic and literacy practices to chart, envisage, and enact change across social lives, political landscapes, and intellectual pursuits. However, while youth are increasingly at the leading edge of linguistic, literate, and sociocultural shifts, their schooling experiences often constrain rather than expand their language and literacy practices. We wonder: is schooled literacy and the secondary subject English being left behind by youth? This roundtable brings together scholars whose work coheres around youth languaging, literacies, and cultural practices to discuss where and how youth -- and what we refer to as “youth epistemologies”-- might help imagine and anticipate what is currently unknown but potentially “soon-to-be” regarding literacies, activism, and organizational collaboration.
