Historicizing for Racial Justice: Reform Schools, Student Activism, and Affirmative Action

Abstract

This symposium presents research projects that utilize historical methods in critical race theory in education research. Using “critical race history,” the presenters discuss the importance of challenging ahistoricism by documenting the historical experiences of Students of Color in educational settings. The presenters share methodological tools and historical analysis that builds the educational historiography of People of Color in schools. Specifically, the presenters look at reform schools and their impacts of Girls of Color, Student of Color activism in higher education, and the importance of challenging ahistorical discourse in affirmative action discussions.
